Benefits

This practical course begins with a review of the basic principles of statics, strength of materials and structural analysis. The focus is on helping you understand concepts and design solutions rather than rigorous mathematical derivations. We assume that you have an engineering background and want to enhance and upgrade your knowledge and skills in the area of structural design. Attend this course and broaden your knowledge and skills. You will learn how to:

  • determine major structural loading conditions, including dead, live, snow, wind and seismic loads
  • evaluate structural requirements
  • select appropriate systems and materials
  • develop shear and moment diagrams
  • calculate member sizes
  • solve incidental day-to-day structural problems
  • design footings, foundations, columns, beams, floor systems, shear walls and diaphragms
  • design simple structures in concrete, steel and wood
  • size equipment supports, components and anchorages.

Topics

  • Structural Analysis
  • Strength of Materials
  • Structural Steel Design
  • Reinforced Concrete Design
  • Structural Design Using Wood and Wood Products

Audience

This course will benefit architects and architectural engineers; non-structural engineers such as mechanical, electrical and plant engineers; and others who would like to know more about structural systems and solving routine structural problems. If you are involved in the design and construction of concrete, steel, or wood structures and components, you will find this course particularly helpful.
